UK  University Application Process

   Prepared By: Sahar Basirat

   Edited By: Shahdad Azmoon

Date of Publication: September 8th, 2005

v     To apply for any university in the UK you must apply via UCAS which is an organization which sends your application form to the universities that you have chosen and also you can track the progress of your application in their website.

v     You will have to apply to the universities a year before starting your university. Therefore the universities assess your application form based on your AS-Level results. You will have to get the same results at the second year at college in order to be accepted.

v     For competitive courses such as medicine the deadline is 15th of October

v     If you are applying for medicine, you are only allowed to apply for 4 medical schools.

v     The two remaining choices are for your back up choice; in case your application fails.

v     By looking at your grades, personal statement and also work experience you will get an offer.

v     The grades that most universities require for medicine is AAB. However you have to always check with the universities as the requirements may alter each year

v     Some universities including Oxford and Cambridge require a pass in BMAT exam as well as good grades in you’re A-Levels.

v     For your back up choices, you might be asked to submit a different personal statement other than the one in your UCAS application form

v     UCAS will start to receive the application forma from 1st of September

v     Your GCSE grades will also be taken into account and most universities require at least 6 A’s

v     If for any reason you fail to achieve the required grades due to exceptional circumstances you will still be able to apply to your chosen course as long as you provide a good reason for not achieving the grades. Your college will also have to write to the university to support your reason.

v     If you want to apply to medicine but you are not doing the required courses such as chemistry or biology at college, you will need at least AAB in the subjects that you are doing and you will have to apply to premedical course.

v     Most universities require at least 4 subjects in you’re a-Level. Some colleges do not allow the students to take more than 3 subjects. In these cases, the applicants will not be disadvantaged if they provide the supporting evidence from their college.
