Hypertension (HTN) or high blood pressure can be a chronic condition with significant co-morbidity and mortality.  HTN will put excess stress on the heart as well as vessel walls.  Some of the complications of long standing high blood pressure may be heart attack, stroke, heart failure, kidney failure and / or  blindness.  Optimal control of blood pressure is the best way to maintain prophylaxis from such complications.  One of the more conservative ways to controlling blood pressure may be with your diet.  Recently a group of Chinese investigators studied the effects of soybean protein on the effects of blood pressure.  In this study 302 Chinese adults were enrolled.  Their ages ranged from 35 to 64 years, their systolic blood pressures ranged from 130 to 159 mm Hg and their diastolic blood pressures ranged from 88 to 99 mm.  The systolic number refers to the top number and the diastolic refers to the bottom number.  Through out this study patients enrolled where not on any blood pressure medication.  Patients were divided into two groups and given cookies to eat on a daily basis for a period of 12 weeks.  In one group the cookies contained 40 grams of soybean.  Soybean cookies reduced systolic as well as diastolic blood pressures by about 3 to 4 mm Hg more than non-soybean cookies.  These results do have limitations and should be taken with caution.  Some limitations of this study may be other ingredients in the cookies which may have had effects on blood pressure.  As well other dietary factors may be contributing to higher or lower blood pressures in the study patients.  All patients were of Chinese background and soybean effects on blood pressure may be different in the different ethnicities.  12 weeks is relatively a short period of time for a thorough evaluation as well as the total number of patients may be too few to have a significant impact.  What should be gained from this study is that soybean protein supplementation may help lower blood pressure in some people and that further studies are needed to further evaluate the effects of soybean protein in the long term management of high blood pressure.
