Your personal statement should not be longer than 1 page, margins straightened on both side, spell and grammar checked. Applying for medical school statement goals: Why medicine, what have you done, where are you going. Applying for residency personal statement goals: Field of interest, why, and how it fits in with your professional goals. Make sure every sentences relays the idea you want the reader to get. Do not generalize, anyone can do that. Be original, make yourself stand out. Remember, application reviewers will be reading thousands of personal statements. What brought you to this point is likely unique to you. Relating that unique-ness to your field of interest or professional goal is the resident level personal statement. Your first paragraph will set the tone for reader. Make sure he will have much enthusiasm in wanting to continue reading Your last paragraph is what the reader will likely remember the most. Make sure it is heart felt and succinct in summarizing, You, as explained by you in your essay. Do talk about your strong points, but don’t just talk about yourself without evidence that you have proved it to yourself during your career. Your personal statement should not be your CV, that’s what your CV is for. If you can’t talk about it in detail, then you should not include it in your essay! Your essay should flow. Do not over use words like I or My (ie. I liked this. I want this. I did this. I had to do this.) Give yourself 2-3 months to write an essay. Have several people read it and give you feedback. A good book to read might be “Iserson’s Getting Into A Residency.” I felt it helped me. Best of luck, shahdad
