Many studies have associated a reduced risk of coronary heart disease in association with fish consumption, but mechanisms of this association have not been well understood.  The ATTICA Study was setup to investigate the relationship between fish consumption and levels of various inflammatory markers in the blood of human adults without evidence of cardiovascular disease.  In the ATTICA Study approximately 3000 patients from the Attica region of Greece were enrolled, approxiamately 50% men and 50% women, ages 18 to 89 yrs.  Inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin (IL)-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, serum amyloid A (SAA), as well as white blood cells (WBC) were measured along with the patient’s dietary habits, which included fish consumption.  Approximately 91% of patients reported eating fish at least once a month and when compared to non-fish eaters, those who consumed greater than 300 g of fish per week had significant reduction of measured inflammatory markers compared to non-fish eaters.  More specifically 33% lower CRP, 33% lower IL-6, 21% lower TNF-alpha, 28% lower SAA levels, and 4% lower WBC counts.  Significant diminution of inflammatory markers were also noted in the subgroup of patients who consumed 150 to 300 grams of fish per week when compared to non-fish eaters.  The authors of the ATTICA Study concluded that fish consumption was independently associated with lower inflammatory markers levels, among healthy adults.
